Ladakh Travel Guide: Routes, Acclimatisation and Responsible Travel

Ladakh is visually dramatic, but its altitude deserves more respect than a normal sightseeing destination. The best trip is built around acclimatisation, realistic road days and enough flexibility for weather and local conditions.

Start gently

Plan at least two easy days after arriving in Leh. Hydration, rest, light meals and avoiding alcohol at the beginning help your body adjust. Your itinerary should become more ambitious only after you are comfortable at the base altitude.

Build a sensible route

Thiksey, Shey, Hemis and the Indus Valley make a rewarding early excursion. Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake can follow, but each road day is long and the landscape changes quickly. A private vehicle gives you the freedom to stop, rest and adapt.

Keep buffer time for weather or road delays. The journey itself is part of the experience, and rushing between viewpoints can make the trip less enjoyable.

Travel responsibly

  • Carry a reusable bottle and avoid single-use plastic.
  • Use marked paths around monasteries and fragile landscapes.
  • Dress respectfully in villages and religious places.
  • Choose local guides, stays and food where possible.

Ladakh is most rewarding when you approach it with curiosity and humility. Let the mountains set the pace.
